Update: Royal Caribbean spokeman Harrison Liu characterized the small fire as a "non event." Liu tells Cruise Critic that it was easily contained, and won't affect production or scheduling for Oasis of the Seas.
A small fire is said to have broken out earlier today aboard Oasis of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's innovative new-build under construction at Aker Yard in Finland.
Industry publication Cruise Business Review reported that insulation material on Deck 9 caught fire as a result of nearby welding work. The 1,500 workers onboard at the time were evacuated, and fire fighter's from the yard's own squad were able to put out the flames. Damages were characterized as "not extensive."
Though rare, fires do break out at the shipyard. In 2002, Diamond Princess caught fire while at the ship yard, resulting in the destruction of approximately 70 percent of the vessel.
